I really loved exploring Text Rain. I was amazed that the words and letters react to human motion, I couldn’t even comprehend how that would work. I would love to create something so beautiful and complex. I really liked the images that came with the explanation, they were extremely aesthetically pleasing. The idea of it creating a poem that centers on bodies and language is really intriguing and pulls the whole piece together. The Far Away From Far Away story sounds like something I would enjoy. I love the explanation on its website that says, “This is a story about the importance of place. And the importance of small places in particular. It ultimately serves as a reminder that we all walk with one foot in the past and the other firmly in the future.” I feel like that explanation alone would catch anyone’s attention.
For my bring it to the table this week I explored the Yellow Arrow Project. This was a geo-location project that took place from 2004-2006. This is the website’s explanation of the project “Participants place uniquely coded Yellow Arrow stickers to draw attention to different locations and objects […]. By sending an SMS from a mobile phone to the Yellow Arrow phone number beginning with the arrow’s unique code, Yellow Arrow authors essentially save a thought on the spot where they place their sticker. Messages range from short poetic fragments to personal stories to game-like prompts to action.” The project took place in almost 40 different countries. When people found a sticker, they could text the code to the yellow arrow phone number, and in return, they’d get an SMS of the original author’s saved message and were able to respond to it and the response would be sent to the person who created the message.
Wow, Yellow Arrow sounds awesome! There are so many creative possibilities with this, I would love to be able to try it. Although, I do wonder if the texts were cut off at some point, and if there was any system to share messages so that they would be saved.
