Divergent Streams
In the final chapter of Electronic Literature Scott Rettberg discusses Divergent Streams as the last installment of the book. This chapter focuses on locative narrative, digital literary installations, virtual and augmented reality narrative as well as interactive/combinatory cinema. Locative narratives use a person’s location based on their GPS device or IP address (Rettberg 183). There are many e-lit pieces that use locative narratives to tell a story about a certain space. Locative narrative allows for digital artists to expand their skills and tools. Another highlight from the chapter was interactive installations. Interactive installation is described in the book as “…installations bring elements of spectacle and meaning into tension with each other” they allow for interpretations through text (Rettberg 191). I also really enjoyed looking at Text Rain which is an example of an interactive installment. This installment allows the person to interact with the text. Another project that I liked was Bubble. It’s a mobile story about keeping a bubble clean where you can physically clean your bubble. It’s very interactive and engaging. I also looked at Motto where you can take videos and upload them. Motto is interesting because it keeps everyone’s identity anonymous, and creates a safe place.
I was really intrigued by The L.A. Flood Project created by Mark Marino. This project can be found on many different platforms. It began when the University of Southern California took narratives from a disaster and adapted these stories into one (Rettberg 187). I was able to access this story through Google Maps, but it can also be accessed through Twitter (Rettberg 188). This piece is very cool because you can see different narratives on this fictional disaster all throughout L.A. Typically each character splits up their narrative into three stages: before the flood, during, and after. It is a pretty realistic concept. It is also similar to our last Play assignment where we expressed our emotion on a Google Map.
Natalia, this is such a cool project and also super accurate too. I liked that there was some humor to juxtapose this heavy situation.
ReplyDeleteHi Natalia! I was also very intrigued by this project and ended up researching it. I find that the many narratives present make the map very immersive and captivating to look at. It's such a cool project!
