What is E-Lit? Post One

Rettberg's use of imagination when introducing E-Lit runs deeper than just closing your eyes for a moment. Electronic, or digital, literature is not only a new age platform for literacy, but also an open door for new advances and creations as literature grows in our world. I was really intrigued by the topic of titles regarding E-Lit, and how the generality of "electronic literature" has remained steady through the first few decades of its life, compared to "digital literature", which narrows down the realm but doesn't quite allow for the freeing imprecision of "electronic." I had no idea what ELO was until reading this chapter, however it was truly interesting to be taken through the foundational concepts of ELO and what it entails. ELO's original list of forms of electronic literature made me smile because we, as a society, have created a world of electronic literature that expands far beyond the concepts on this list. In my opinion, it is something to celebrate, to take a moment to look back as literary connoisseurs and appreciate the foundations of E-Lit.

A work that was referenced in this chapter and stood out to me was Manovich's "Generation Flash" which discuses empowering new technologies to encourage blends between various cultures and styles. I found his viewpoint especially interesting on how these new technologies that we have developed have shaped us into the society that we are today, as well as their pivotal role in electronic music and the integration of styles and sounds on the internet. I liked his take on how music is the most advanced artistic field and way ahead of its time in terms of E-Lit. This was a super interesting piece to dive into and I enjoyed exploring Lev Manovich's work.

  1. I took a look at the essay you linked and I really enjoyed it! Thinking of e-lit and our generation as a “remix culture” can remind us of all the projects we’ve made and all the new blends of possibilities waiting to be published!
