What is E-Lit?

Electronic literature can be defined as a collection of literary works that utilize the processes and capabilities of computers and the internet. Electronic literature excludes print that has been digitized. Instead, it encompasses literary works that are created on a computer and meant to be interacted with on a computer. Computer coding allows for literary works to evolve into more than just words on a page. Electronic literature has a wide variety of genres that would not be possible with a pen and paper. For example, in interactive fiction, the users input drives the narrative to its conclusion. However, one of the limitations of electronic literature is its tendency to become obsolete. It can easily be deleted or changed, and thus lost to time.

Uncle Roy All Around You | Blast Theory

Uncle Roy All Around You is a game which combines the real world with simulation. This took place in London in 2003. Street players are players who are tasked with finding a fictional character called Uncle Roy in 60 minutes. They are given a tracking device that lets them know their location and also interact with virtual players. Virtual players are given the same task as street players, but they navigate a 3D digital copy of the real city on a computer. Towards the end of the game, both types of players are asked if they are willing to give there contact information to a stranger and promise to be there for them if they are having a personal crisis. I found this to be very intriguing because it makes me wonder how those in the real world would act differently than those in the virtual world. Did virtual players help real players more or did they mislead them more? Were virtual players more likely to commit to helping someone then street players or visa versa?

  1. Hi CJ! I really enjoyed your point about coding being a catalyst for literary evolution, especially in our technologically-reliant society! I feel that many people forget about the coding aspect of all digital-based projects, but in order to fully understand how they function, you have to have at least a minor understanding of coding! I look forward to hearing your Bring It To The Table discussion today, and learn more about Uncle Roy All Around You!
